‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Renewed for Season 3 (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)
Jeremy Renner is returning for duty to Paramount+.
The actor, who suffered 30 broken bones in a New Year’s Day snowplow accident, is set to return to his starring role in the streamer’s Taylor Sheridan drama Mayor of Kingstown. The series, which wrapped its second season in March, has now officially been renewed for a third season on the Paramount Global-backed platform. Sources say the series had been quietly picked up months ago but the streamer delayed a formal announcement for the crime drama’s return while Renner recovered from his injuries.
Renner shared on social media in May that he was continuing to make progress on his recovery and had begun lightly jogging on a treadmill for the first time since he was hospitalized. A return date for season three has not yet been determined given Renner’s recovery as well as the ongoing labor disputes involving writers and actors with studios and streamers.
As for the show, Renner stars as Mike McLusky in the drama that explores the family who keeps the peace in a town filled with street gangs, prisoners, guards and cops. Paramount+ says Kingstown is its third-best-performing original drama on the platform, following only Sheridan’s 1923 and Tulsa King. It’s worth noting that Paramount+, like other streamers, does not release traditional viewership data. The Writers Guild is currently seeking streaming viewership transparency from Hollywood’s top streamers and studios, as well as an effort to tie residuals to show performance.
Sheridan created Kingstown alongside Hugh Dillon. Both exec produce alongside Renner, Antoine Fuqua, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, Dave Erickson and Regina Corrado. The show is produced in-house by MTV Studios and 101 Studios.
Sheridan’s Paramount+ roster includes Special Ops: Lioness, 1923, 1883, Tulsa King and the upcoming Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Land Man. He’s also behind Yellowstone, which airs as an original series on Paramount Network.
